【China Affairs】Alibaba cracks down on piracy, handling complaints within 24 hours

The Platform Governance Department of Alibaba has announced the upgrading of the Intellectual Property Protection (IPP) Platform, using the advanced technological capabilities of Alibaba to launch the Express IPP Plan. According to the data, in the first month of the pilot plan Express IPP, 96% of the complaints were handled within 24 hours. The speed has been significantly increased compared to three to four days in the past. Among the cases of the 96%, more than 83% of the IP-infringing products listings were taken down.

The IPP Platform under Alibaba is used by brands and IP owners to reflect to the Platform when IP-infringing products have been found. The advanced technology, based on algorithms and data models, identifies and analyzes texts, pictures and user behaviors to build a more automated system of complaint handling, analysis and product authenticity identification.

It is worth mentioning that Express IPP has a help hotline "Online Panorama" service which allows the professional team of the Platform Governance to accelerate response time for inquiries. The waiting time for users is reduced from 500 to 100 seconds. The team at the same time proactively reaches out to new IPP users and assists individually those with more complicated intellectual property rights (IPR) cases. In addition, besides Chinese and English, multi-lingual trademark information has been added in Portuguese, Spanish, French and Russian, which may expand the scope of brand protection.

HW Interpretation:

In recent years, there have been more and more Cross-Strait disputes on patent rights, trademark rights and copyrights. The protection of IPR is relatively complicated, and not as easy to handle in cross-border infringement. If you have disputes in the aspect of IPR, we recommend you to seek assistance from professionals with relevant experience, so as to protect your own rights.
